Hi everyone,
First and foremost, my heart goes to all of those that were impacted by the wildfires in L.A. this week. The pictures of devastation are profound and I cannot begin to fathom what it must be like to navigate it all. Mutual Aid L.A. Network has put together this exhaustive list with mutual aid resources for those affected by the fires in Los Angeles - please share with whoever may need it! Exact link: tiny.cc/malan-fire
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
I have been going through and doing yet another clean up of all of our closets and added so many items to my Poshmark this week. Please feel free to put together a bundle to save more if you wish!
Thank you so much to everyone that weighed in on the newsletter last week! Many of you love the current format that includes a variety of different topics every week. I plan to keep that the same but dive deeper with the separate paid posts.
One of the more common themes I read was that you wanted more protein + fitness content. I plan to share a bit more about current favorite protein focused snacks and meals as well as a bit about my fitness routine. Right now I mostly go to a gym that does more of a Crossfit hybrid. It focuses on weightlifting and HIIT workouts (which include more strength training). I have loved the combination of workouts and they vary so much that it keeps it interesting and I feel much stronger than I ever have before. I am hoping to get some new PRs this year with specific lifts and just did a 200 lb deadlift (straight bar not hex) 3 rep max so I want to do that again in a year and see where I am at! My goal is to build more muscle and power. I also have a goal of completing an Olympic triathlon this summer which means I will have much more cardio weaved into daily workouts. I will keep you updated on all that!
Basement update: our basement is getting there! Walls are up and being painted this week. My dad who is the MVP has been doing it all and we are in debt to all he has helped us with when it comes to home renovations. We are hoping to be done by the end of the month. I will put up a video next week! I’ve had some fun putting together a little collage of the kids side of the basement as well as a 3D image to see how everything will fit.
Next week’s dinner lineup:
1.) High Protein Taco Mac N Cheese
2.) Salmon (air fryer), Broccoli, Rice
3.) Slow Cooker Peanut Chicken with peas/carrots and brown rice noodles
4.) Sloppy Joe Sweet Potatoes (rolls for kids)
5.) Leftovers
PS. Making this banana bread this weekend!

WATCH/LISTEN || Take Me Home (Save Our Kids) | GAWNE x Atlus → this music video/new song is extremely powerful (had me in tears).
READ/LISTEN || The House of My Mother: A Daughter's Quest for Freedom | Shari Franke → Many of you have probably heard about the Ruby Franke scandal. The mom influencer and Youtuber who filmed “8 passengers” was sentenced to 30 years in prison and Shari (her eldest daughter) tells the story. I listened to this on audible in TWO days and WOW. So much to unpack that I think I am going to make it into a completely separate post. Read or listen so that we can discuss! Oh, there is also a documentary!
READ || DrawTogether with WendyMac | Substack → I recently stumbled upon this lovely substack publication and highly recommend it. New York Times-bestselling artist Wendy MacNaughton created this publication that has writing lessons weekly and allows us all to use our brains in a bit of a different way - I love it!
READ || H5N1 Update | Your Local Epidemiologist → If you are worried about H5N1 at all or just want to educate yourself a bit more, this is a great read from Katelyn!
READ || The Multi-Trillion-Dollar Wellness Industry Is Making Us Sick | The Walrus → When I first graduated PA school in 2008, I moved to NYC and worked for a prominent alternative medicine physician. Without going into too much detail, let’s just say the law was not on his side in the long run. I lasted 2 months there before quitting and doing Emergency Medicine (and here I am 16+ years later). Seeing the wellness industry just explode in the last 10 years has been really interesting to watch.
“Alternative medicine is a con game. Its various iterations—CAM, integrative medicine, and functional medicine—are marketing terms designed to confuse patients, promote pseudoscience, and sow distrust in mainstream medicine.”
LISTEN || The Power of Mindfulness by Andi Puddicombe | TED Talk → This is a really important 9 minute listen. Think about what he says when he tells you to reflect on how much time you take to do nothing. Let your mind rest. Don’t pick up your phone. Don’t listen to a podcast. We are no longer present in the world in which we live - it doesn’t need to be that way.
READ || Parents, Put Down Your Phone Cameras | The Atlantic → This realization hit me like a load of bricks back in 2019.
Here are two quotes that stood out:
“Eyes on our screens, we miss out on what is known as ‘collective effervescence,’ the elevated heart rate and goosebumps moments that come from shared experiences of suspense, awe or joy. Think of the swelling of your heart at an exquisite harmony, the knowing glance from another parent in an instant of unintended comedy, or the fleeting eye contact with a child scanning the crowd for reassurance. These are the interactions in which meaning is made.”
“I recall once being so absorbed in recording my daughter’s middle school hip-hop performance that I missed my own emotional response to it. I came home with a lackluster video, zero sense memory of what had just unfolded, and an unsettling pang of regret.”
This was my top played song on Spotify this year…
According to Spotify, February was my “pumpkin spice rock out grunge” phase listening to artists like the Smashing pumpkins, Nirvana and Soundgarden. This made me smile :)
Hozier was my top artist of the year (rightfully so). Quickly followed by Lord Huron

A great tip I saw somewhere recently: If you get lost in the woods, your car breaks down and your phone is about to die or you don’t have a signal → Change your voicemail to a greeting that includes your approximate location, time, date, your situation and any other instructions. Even if your phone dies / stops working, your voicemail will still be there for anyone trying to call / find you!
My husband got a free subscription to Masterclass through work and was able to make me a guest account - he highly recommends this AI class and everything by Coack K (we both like to coach youth sports). There are SO many cool classes on here - have you listened to any that you loved? Let me know!
